Little First Act Discovery Musical Instruments

Posted on 04 March 2009 by abby

Dimitri is totally crazed about musical instruments. He has a veritable orchestra’s worth already, including a drum, an adult harmonica, whistles, maracas and more that I am forgetting. So I was very excited about receiving musical instruments intended for little ones from Little First Act Discovery. The Build-a-Drum is comprised of wooden blocks that you match up with colors and balance on end, with the top on, it becomes a pretty good Drum.

Dimitri has a good time with the blocks, and he and his father have been practicing colors and stacking. I enjoy toys like the Build-a-Drum because they are: a) not electronic and b) they are great toys for several age levels.
The My First Harmonica that we received was very brightly colored and appalling. Dimitri immediately wanted to play with it. Unfortunately he was not able to blow hard enough to make a noise. His adult harmonica is easy for him to use, so that was disappointing. Since Dimitri is only fifteen months and the Harmonica is recommended for eighteen months and up I thought to be fair I should let some other ages try it. Up through age two, kids seemed to have a hard time grasping the concept. The Harmonica has plastic ergonomic handles that young children want to suck on, but alas that produces no noise. Ages 3 and up, however, loved “My first Harmonica”. They spent a long time passing it around and dancing, as a matter of fact, they loved it so much that there were tears when I had to take it home. Dimitri still thinks it is a pretty great toy, he brings it to use to play for him frequently. Unfortunately, this story does have a sad ending. The harmonica has lost 3 of its 4 notes to a severe dunking in the fish tank. Apparently no one anticipated underwater use.

Kalahari Waterpark and Resort

Posted on 27 February 2009 by Lena

The video shows our behind-the-scenes tour of Kalahari Waterpark and Resort in Sandusky, OH that Maris Brenner and Mike Thatcher gave us when we were there for the Unschoolers Winter Waterpark Gathering in February. The tour was interesting, but the most fun at Kalahari is the wave pool!

Other fun things are the arcade and mini golf, madagascar_indoor_mini_golf

the hot tub, the indoor playplace, the basketball swimming pool, the lazy river, the obstacle course, and the water slides! Some of them were too scary for us, but there were some that were just right for us.

Here’s what we did at Kalahari: After playing all day in the waterpark, at night we went to the arcade, and then we went to the hotel room, which was super cool and pretty and big! And then we went to sleep in the comfy beds and then we did the same thing the next day.

Here are some questions that Maris Brenner answered for us:

Lena wanted to know where they get the baby animals for the pictures? kalahari-pic

Maris told us the animals don’t live at Kalahari. A local company has a farm that raises them and Kalahari only gets them for a very short time until they’re too big. So they travel back and forth to work every day. When we got our picture taken with one cub, there was also a little tiger cub sleeping with a big stuffed tiger. It was cute! And then the cub we took our picture with was scooching around on his ball.

Liberty wondered what is Kalahari’s busiest season? Maris said any weekend and any time that kids are not in school is really busy. She said that’s why they love the unschoolers so much, because we go in the middle of the week when they wouldn’t normally be busy.

Noah wanted to know how long it takes to make a water slide. Maris said that was a very good question and she had never been asked that before! Just putting the slide up takes about 2 or 3 months, but getting all of the water and electrical connections going takes a lot longer, like about 9 months.

We’re so happy that we went to Kalahari and we’re going back next month! Go to their website and look at all of the other things they have like the spa, Pottery Pizazz, shopping, and restaurants! Do it NOW!

The Secret of the Magic Gourd

Posted on 24 February 2009 by abby

The Secret of the Magic Gourd is a fun kids’ movie about “what if I got everything I asked for”.  It was a bit above Peyton’s head (age 3) as far as the moral of the story, but he loved the flying fish, the space ships, and all the funny things Bailey (the magic gourd) did.  Older kids will enjoy the school scenes, marching toys, and escapes from trouble.
